S3 Ep09: Sinnerman
Lucifer: Season 3, Episode 09 — Sinnerman
Aired: December 4, 2017
Main Theme of Episode: What people truly desire versus doing the right thing.
Summary
Pierce rejects Chloe’s request for a personal day. Joey Pileggi, who asked Lucifer for a favor months before, winds up murdered. Lucifer reveals the favor was getting him work as a mob courier. Maze becomes uneasy about Linda and Amenadiel growing closer. Charlotte, as a prosecutor, joins Chloe and Lucifer as they question Frankie Ferrante, the mobster who mentored Joey, and learn that his death was not mob-related. Another body turns up, which Lucifer recognizes as another client. Ella identifies the killer as the Sinnerman, who lures Lucifer into an abandoned building and traps him inside. With Charlotte’s help, Chloe manipulates Frankie into going after the Sinnerman, but Charlotte feels hurt that Chloe didn’t tell her the plan. Maze finds Lucifer and forces him to acknowledge her feelings before freeing him. Pierce tells Chloe that he plans to get revenge against the Sinnerman for murdering his brother. The Sinnerman ambushes Frankie, but Chloe and Pierce manage to capture him. Maze asks Linda to stop seeing Amenadiel. Dan comforts Charlotte and tells her being “good” takes time and commitment. Lucifer tries using his powers on the Sinnerman, but the latter gouges his own eyes out before he can do so.
We are the way out
We are the ones you loathe
Call us the wrong crowd
We’ll never walk alone
Don’t need no savior
Don’t need a hand…
(A long line of people waits behind velvet ropes to be let in to LUX. A bouncer guards the entrance. A young man waits anxiously at the end of the line, then decides to cut in and go straight to the bouncer to get in earlier.)
Bouncer: Line’s back there, buddy.
Joey: Is the, uh, big guy in tonight?
(Joey slips the bouncer a one-dollar bill.)
We have gone too far to turn around
We move too fast to keep us down
We are, we are, we are the reckless
Bouncer: This is a one.
Joey: Nice guy discount?
(The bouncer hands Joey back his dollar.)
Bouncer: Make it quick, kid.
Joey: You’re a prince. Thank you.
The reckless
We are the reckless
Go on and chase us
We can’t be caught, oh, no
Call us contagious
(Joey runs into the club. At the top of the stairs, he takes a moment to admire the partying crowd. He sees Lucifer sitting with some guests and runs down the stairs toward him.)
Joey: Hey. Uh, Mr. Morningstar? I hear you’re the guy to talk to. I hear you help people.

Lucifer: What, like Ellen? I think not. (laughs) No, I grant people favors. When it suits me.
Joey: Well, I-I could use a favor. Hear me out, Mr. Morningstar. You won’t regret it.
Lucifer: Victoria, give us a minute, would you, girl?
(Victoria leaves. Lucifer pats the seat next to him in the booth where Victoria was sitting. Joey eagerly sits down.)
Ain’t no way we’re stopping now
Ain’t no way we’re stopping now
We are, we are, we are the reckless
Lucifer: Call me Lucifer.
Joey: Joey Pileggi.
Lucifer: So, Joey Pileggi, what is it you desire?
Dr. Linda: Okay, so, how do you angels work? I know Amenadiel can slow time, and your other brother Uriel could predict patterns. So why is your gift desire?
Lucifer: Well, that’s a good question, actually, I suppose. When I first went to angel school, they sorted us into different houses for different powers.
Dr. Linda: There’s a school for angels?
Lucifer: No. There’s no Hogwarts in the sky.
Dr. Linda: Right. Obviously. Are you using humor to deflect my very reasonable question?
Lucifer: Look, if you must know, we were all born this way, each with our own God-given abilities.
Dr. Linda: But what came first? Do angels’ powers shape their personalities? Or are your personalities shaped by your powers?
Lucifer: Haven’t a clue. Look, all I know is that my powers are perfect for me. Desire is the ultimate expression of free will. I help people do whatever… or whomever… they want.
Dr. Linda: But that’s it? There isn’t more to it?
(Chloe enters without knocking to find Marcus changing his shirt.)
Chloe: Sorry. I-I should have knocked.
Marcus: It’s a late night. Been trying to catch up on all the work since I got out of the hospital. Stole a couple hours on the couch.
Chloe: Um, thank you again… for saving my life. It’s, uh… Looks like you’re, you’re healing really well.
Marcus: It still hurts like a son of a b*tch.
Chloe: You know what? I’ll, um… I’ll just come back another time.
Marcus: Now’s good. What do you want, Decker?
Chloe: Uh, I wanted to request a personal day.
Marcus: What for?
Chloe: Well, it’s personal.
Marcus: I’ll take it under advisement.
Chloe: I didn’t think it’d be an issue.
(Marcus doesn’t look up from his desk or respond to her. Chloe leaves his office.)
Chloe: It’s just one personal day. I never ask for anything.
Lucifer: You’re too low- maintenance, Detective. People assume work is your only desire.
Chloe: Yeah, well, it’s not. Yeah, what a jerk.
Lucifer: Oh, look who’s all hot and bothered. Someone got under your skin. What do you want with a personal day anyway?
Chloe: It’s personal.
(An officer holds up the yellow tape so Chloe and Lucifer can dip underneath. Ella is taking photos of the body. Lucifer looks around the apartment, then goes silent when he sees who the victim is.)
Lucifer: Looks like some sort of poor man’s penthouse, isn’t it?
Chloe: Hmm. Boy, he’s young. Practically a kid.
Ella: Yeah.
Chloe: What happened here? Who would have done this?
Lucifer: I’m afraid I might know. You see, I did this young man a favor.
(As Ella continues to take photos, we see that Joey was tortured and his bones are broken. Lucifer and Chloe go to another room to talk.)
Chloe: Lucifer, can I talk to you? What exactly does this have to do with you?
Lucifer: Well, his name’s Joey. Joey Pileggi, he came to me a few months ago and asked me for a favor, and I granted it to him.
Chloe: You’re still doing that?
Lucifer: I’d never stop granting favors, Detective. I mean, I may have gotten distracted for a while, but then I realized granting favors defines me. I mean, you wouldn’t ask Superman not to fly? A Kardashian not to selfie? So I started up again, and it was going splendidly, until…
Chloe: What kind of favor? And don’t tell me it got Joey k*lled.
Lucifer: Well, his desire was to become the new Godfather, a Scarface for millennials.
Chloe: You introduced him to the mob?
Lucifer: I may have gotten him an internship.
(Chloe is frustrated. She goes back into the main room to talk to Ella.)
Chloe: Ella. What do you have on the cause of death?
Ella: Two g*nsh*t wounds to the chest, and his legs were broken. Practically shattered. But here’s the weird part. I thought that the k*ller broke Joey’s legs first… You know, torturing him before k*lling him… but look. Minimal hemorrhaging. That’s when I realized Joey’s legs were broken postmortem.
Chloe: Why? What’s the k*ller trying to say?
Lucifer: Oh, no.
Chloe: What?
Lucifer: Well, it may be a commentary on the job that I got for him. As a runner for the mob.
(Amenadiel is visiting Dr. Linda and is sitting on her couch.)
Amenadiel: (laughing) Angel school?
Dr. Linda: Okay, what? It’s not that funny, okay. Okay. Okay, it’s kind of funny.
Amenadiel: You really thought angel school was a thing?
Dr. Linda: How was I supposed to know? What’s crazier, angel school, or that you can slow time, or that Lucifer can draw out people’s desires?
Amenadiel: Okay, I can see how that would seem strange.
Dr. Linda: No, it’s bananas, Amenadiel. I mean, how does any of it all work? Like… why is your power slowing down time?
Amenadiel: Maybe my Father wanted me to be a better emissary, someone who could fix things on Earth and stay invisible. So, I can slow down time and do His bidding without anyone being the wiser.
Dr. Linda: That seems really… sad.
Amenadiel: What do you mean?
Dr. Linda: I mean, it… it just seems lonely to visit humanity without ever really getting to know anyone.
Amenadiel: I guess I was never told to avoid humanity. It just seemed easier. And quite honestly, I never saw the point. Until recently.
(The door opens and Maze enters.)
Dr. Linda: Hey, stranger…
(Maze is a bit put off-guard by finding Amenadiel with Dr. Linda.)
Dr. Linda: Maze! You’re back!
(Dr. Linda and Maze hug.)
Maze: Yeah! Oh, I missed you, too, girl.
Amenadiel: Where was your bounty this time, Mazikeen?
Maze: Uh, Cleveland. Now I’m banned in Ohio. Ah. So, uh, what’s going on? What are you guys up to?
Amenadiel: Okay. Well, Linda… Linda was just catching me up on how sh… on how she believed in “angel school.”
Maze: Oh. You…guys catch up, huh?
Dr. Linda: Yes. Yeah, we… we’ve been hanging out.
Amenadiel: Yeah, we’re friends.
Maze: Right. Right. Friends.
(Ella is briefing Chloe, Lucifer, and Dan on the case.)
Ella: It’s not just any shoe. Joey’s high-tops were limited edition. Easily worth a grand a pair. I mean, my brothers would flip over these.
Lucifer: Sweet kicks indeed.
(Charlotte enters.)
Charlotte: Sorry I’m late.
Chloe: Charlotte. What are you doing here? Little early for opposing counsel.
Dan: Are you defending someone?
Charlotte: No. I quit my job.
Lucifer: Oh. Well, good for you, Charlotte. Had enough of life as a corrupt defense lawyer, have you? That’ll help keep your ledger clear.
Charlotte: Today is my first day in the district attorney’s office… as a prosecutor. I’m on your side now. Surprise.
Chloe: (to Lucifer) Did you know about this?
Lucifer: Not a clue.
Dan: How did this happen?
Ella: Who knows how these things happen? So random. Guess we should get back to the case, right? Right.
Lucifer: Right.
Ella: So, Joey had expensive shoes, plus… a real Rolex and ten grand stashed under his bed.
Chloe: But Joey worked for the mob. I mean, wouldn’t that explain all the swag?
Dan: Runners for the mob don’t make that kind of money. There’s no way he could afford that. Maybe Joey was skimming off the top.
(Charlotte raises her hand to speak.)
Lucifer: No, you don’t have to raise your hand.
Charlotte: Okay, well, um, his bosses wouldn’t like that. They would execute Joey to send a message to the whole organization. Whoever brought him in would do the deed.
Chloe: Lovely.
Charlotte: What? I know how these guys work. I’ve represented mobsters like this for years. Alleged mobsters.
Chloe: Who did you introduce Joey to?
Lucifer: Frankie the Knife. Sweet chap.
Dan: Sounds like a peach.
Chloe: All right, let’s bring in Frankie and see where Joey’s education went wrong.
Lucifer: Right.
(Maze has left. Amenadiel and Dr. Linda sit on the couch talking.)
Dr. Linda: Okay, that was weird.
Amenadiel: Is it… weird for… us to be friends?
Dr. Linda: No. Of course not. I mean, can’t a… Can’t a woman be friends with a… with a brilliant, tall, gorgeous angel?
Amenadiel: Well, can’t an angel be friends with a… amazing, accomplished… …beautiful, and passionate woman?
(Amenadiel leans in, and he and Dr. Linda kiss. She then draws back from him.)
Dr. Linda: Um… I can’t. This is a mistake.
Amenadiel: Okay. Okay. I’m so sorry, Linda.
(They look at each other then kiss again.)
Charlotte: Detective, Lucifer. Are you about to talk to Frankie the Knife?
Chloe: Yep.
Charlotte: Well, I can help. I know him. I defended him once.
Lucifer: (checking his phone) Unknown caller? Um… Look, why don’t you give the newbie a shot, Detective? I mean, I for one would love an audience when I ream Frankie for what he did.
Chloe: No one will be reaming anyone. Fine, Charlotte. Just keep a low profile.
Charlotte: You won’t even know I’m there.
(Frankie is sitting at the table when Lucifer and Chloe enter, followed by Charlotte.)
Lucifer: Hello, Frankie.
Chloe: Mr. Ferrante. I’m Detective Decker.
Lucifer: We know each other quite well, don’t we, Frankie?
Frankie: Not sure we’ve met, buddy.
Lucifer: Oh, please.
Chloe: And this is…
Frankie: Charlotte Richards? How are you? How are the kids?
Charlotte: Hi, Frankie.
Frankie: Man, the guys are sure gonna be jealous when they hear you’re defending me.
Charlotte: Look, Frankie, I’m not your lawyer. I’m the prosecutor. I work with the cops now. Against you.
Frankie: What’s the world coming to?
Chloe: Yeah, tell me about it.
Lucifer: What happened, Frankie? You were supposed to mentor Joey Pileggi, not k*ll him.
Frankie: I got no idea about any k*lling.
Lucifer: Oh, did Joey steal from you, so you made a brutal example of him? Well, guess what? I love making brutal examples of people.
Frankie: Like I said, I don’t know any Joey, and I don’t know you.
Chloe: (Slaps a photo of Joey on the table in front of Frankie.) You do know him.
Frankie: Yeah, I might’ve seen him once. It’s hard to say.
Chloe: Is it true you’re the head of the Ferrante mob family?
Lucifer: Well, come on. Answer her.
Charlotte: You do not need to answer that.
Frankie: I don’t?
Charlotte: (Realizing she is not a defense attorney any longer.) But it would be helpful if you did.
Lucifer: Right. Enough of this “bad cop, worse cop.” Tell me, Frankie. What is it you really want?
(Lucifer stands and leans over the table, looks at Frankie, and uses his power of desire on him.)
Frankie: (after a long pause) I want to find out who k*lled little Joey, and I want payback.
Lucifer: Oh.
Frankie: He was… He was such a good kid, that Joey. A real go-getter. We all loved him. He had a real bright future.
Chloe: We found quite a bit of contraband on him. Did he ever steal anything from you?
Frankie: Joey? Never. Everything he had he got from us.
Lucifer: Oh, quite the lavish employers, aren’t you?
Frankie: Hey, me and the fellas, we’re real generous to our family. ‘Cause that’s who he was… family. If there’s anything I can do to help with Joey’s k*ller, you let me know, ’cause I would love to bring him in.
Charlotte: (leaning down to whisper to Chloe) That means he would k*ll him.
Chloe: Oh, thank you, Charlotte. Thanks.
(Dan enters.)
Dan: Hey, Chloe?
Chloe: Yes.
Dan: I don’t think Frankie’s our guy. His alibi checks out. Look what just came in.
(Chloe reads a note Dan just handed her.)
Chloe: Lucifer. We got another body. Let’s go.
(Chloe and Lucifer enter an elegant living room that has a body hanging from the chandelier.)
Chloe: Double-tap to the chest, just like Joey.
Lucifer: Detective, I know this woman.
Chloe: What?
Lucifer: I did her a favor, too, years ago. This isn’t just a m*rder. It’s another message. For me.
(The woman’s body is now lying on the carpet and Ella is crouched over it giving her assessment.)
Ella: Someone was definitely sending a message. Frieda Marquez, 36.
The noose was made out of her own hair. How twisted is that? But hanging wasn’t what k*lled her. She died from two g*nshots to the chest.
Chloe: So the k*ller arranged her after he k*lled her, just like with Joey.
Lucifer: We need to find the man who did this and punish him.
Chloe: Lucifer, what do you know about her?
Lucifer: Frieda wanted to become a hairstylist to the stars, so I made a few choice introductions, that’s all.
Ella: I can’t believe you knew Frieda. Her hair products are huge. She had salons all over the city, a whole beauty empire. I use her finishing cream every day.
Lucifer: Right. Well, then I guess she got what she wanted. Until now.
Chloe: Thanks, Ella. (to Lucifer) Can I talk to you? (They step away to talk.) If these messages really are for you, I’m worried. Who’s sending them? What are they trying to say?
Lucifer: Detective, I wasn’t entirely forthcoming earlier. The real reason I started granting favors again was because of the Sinnerman.
Chloe: Lucifer, I’ve told you this before. I haven’t seen any shred of evidence that this guy really exists.
Lucifer: Well, now might be the time to become a believer, because this appears to be his way of escalating our rivalry.
Chloe: You think this is the same guy that kidnapped you and dumped you in the desert?
Lucifer: Amongst other things, yes.
Chloe: Okay, well, I’m gonna need proof that this guy is real.
(Lt. Marcus Pierce enters.)
Marcus: Oh, he is real. And very dangerous. His organization has been wreaking havoc in the Midwest for years. I ran into him in Chicago. I couldn’t get my hands on him.
Lucifer: See? It’s the one thing the lieutenant and I agree on… our common enemy, the Sinnerman.
Chloe: So you two discussed this? When were you gonna fill me in?
Marcus: It’s a need-to-know basis only, Decker. Feel free to blame me.
Lucifer: Hmm.
Marcus: The thing is, this does not seem like the Sinnerman. He kills for power and influence. Taunting a nightclub owner seems petty, small.
Lucifer: Well, perhaps you don’t know the full story.
Chloe: Okay, we’re gonna treat this m*rder as we would any other crime… we follow the evidence till we find the truth, Sinnerman or not.
Lucifer: Sorry, but I don’t have time for that.
Chloe: Lucifer, where are you going?
(Lucifer hurriedly comes out of the elevator, leaving a voicemail for Amenadiel, then pouring himself a drink. Maze waits and watches him.)
Lucifer: Brother! I’m about to tear the criminal underworld apart, looking for this Sinnerman fellow. I’d appreciate your help. Call me back. Oh, also, it’s Lucifer.
Maze: Good luck with that. He’s probably too busy with Linda to answer.
Lucifer: Mazikeen, you’re back! I love the hair.
Maze: (She’s holding a demon blade in each hand.) Can we talk?
Lucifer: We certainly can. Good timing. I need your help.
Maze: Hang on. Do you even care what I was about to say?
Lucifer: Of course I do. It’s just that my current problem is important.
Maze: Well, how do you know my thing isn’t important?
Lucifer: Okay. Fine. What is it?
Maze: Did…
(His phone rings again.)
Lucifer: Sorry, just… Telemarketers. They’ve been hounding me all day. This won’t take long. Hello?
Maze: Unbelievable.
(Maze walks out while Lucifer’s back is turned.)
Lucifer: Look, whatever it is you’re selling, I’m not interested, so…
Sinnerman: Really? And I thought you were looking for me.
Ella: It’s the Sinnerman.
Chloe: You got the Sinnerman’s DNA profile? How?
Ella: Our second vic, Frieda… total fighter. She struggled with the k*ller and scratched him. So I checked out her fingernail scrapings and found blood and skin cells.
Chloe: And came up with the k*ller’s DNA.
Ella: Which matches a hair that I recovered from Joey’s place. So, boom, we can place the k*ller at both scenes. But that’s not even the cool part. I did some more digging and found a perfect match with a blood spatter sample from an old Sinnerman case in Chicago.
Chloe: Proving that Pierce’s Sinnerman really is operating in L.A. Ella, you’re a miracle worker.
(Out in the hall, Marcus is helping move a heavy table, which makes his arms look pumped and strong. Seeing him distracts Chloe from listening to Ella.)
Ella: Aw, no biggie. My peeps in Detroit made some calls to Chicago PD for me. Meant hours of sifting through case files, but, you know, I just put on my Beastie Boys and powered through. Decker, did you hear what I said?
Chloe: What? Hmm? Sorry. No.
Ella: Aw, never mind. (Turns her head to see that Chloe was looking at Marcus.) Man, I can’t believe nothing ever sparked between you and the lieutenant. I could’ve sworn you guys had chemistry.
Chloe: No. No chemistry.
Ella: Well, win some, lose some, I guess.
Chloe: That’s right. That is right. Okay, I’m gonna call Lucifer. Awesome work.
(Chloe calls Lucifer on the phone as she leaves the lab.)
Chloe: Hey, Lucifer, you were right. Call me back. Try not to gloat too much.
(Not looking, she almost runs into Marcus.)
Marcus: Oh, easy, Decker. What’s the rush?
Chloe: Hey, Lieutenant. Um, so Ella found the Sinnerman’s DNA at both scenes, and I think we can use that to lean on Frankie Ferrante.
Marcus: That’s promising. Where’s Lucifer? You need help? I mean, I’m free.
Chloe: Oh, um… Oh, I’m-I’m good, thanks. I’m, um… I’m okay. I’m gonna… (She sees Charlotte getting coffee.) I’m gonna take Charlotte.
Marcus: I’m sensing some tension here.
Chloe: Really? I’m not.
Marcus: I haven’t forgotten about your request for a personal day. Things have been crazy here. I just haven’t had a chance to look at the schedule yet.
Chloe: Yeah. No. All good. I haven’t been thinking about that. I-I’m actually gonna take Charlotte ’cause she’s perfect for this.
Marcus: Keep me posted.
Chloe: Mm-hmm.
(Charlotte comes over to Chloe.)
Charlotte: You needed me, Detective?
Chloe: Sure do. Let’s go.
Cold, cold blood
Cold, cold blood
No light when all the dust has settled
No life at all will ever…
(Lucifer drives up and parks in front of the location the Sinnerman said they should meet. The gate is chained shut. Lucifer grabs and breaks the change with one hand. He angrily marches up the stairs to an upper floor.)
Lucifer: Oh, Sinnerman! Where are you?
The dust has settled

Lucifer: The slaughterhouse vibe is a little try-hard, don’t you think? You know, it’s quite the party foul when the host doesn’t even show up!
Sinnerman: In here.
Lucifer: Ah, so what is it, hide-and-seek now?
(Lucifer follows in the direction he heard the voice.)
Cold, cold blood
Come on, let’s talk.
Lucifer: That is, if you’re man enough to face me!
(Lucifer walks into a room. The heavy metal door slams shut behind him.)
Cold, cold blood.
Sinnerman: I do love a captive audience.
Walking to the other side of the room, Lucifer sees the live feed of a man on a TV monitor.
Lucifer: (slow claps) Oh. Well played. It’s a pleasure to finally meet you.

Sinnerman: Likewise.
Lucifer: Always gratifying to find out that one’s nemesis is altogether lacking in style.
Sinnerman: Never been much of a dresser. I express myself through my work.
Lucifer: I take it you’re referring to Frieda and Joey. Why harm them when you wanted me?
Sinnerman: Well, you can’t have a trap without bait, can you, now? I hate to toot my own horn, but I got you good.
Lucifer: Yes, indeed you did. Quite the mousetrap you’ve laid out for me. And, unfortunately for you, I’m no mouse.
(Lucifer walks to the door and punches it with all his might, believing he will break through, but the door does not budge.)
Sinnerman: And, unfortunately for you, that’s a foot of reinforced steel. Takes a little extra to hold the Devil.
Lucifer: Who are you? How did you return my wings and steal my face?
Sinnerman: Hmm. You’re just chock-full of questions, aren’t you? Questions I’ll answer in time, ’cause you should have plenty of that. This place has been abandoned for at least ten years. Maybe they’ll knock it down with you still in it.
Lucifer: I tell you what, why don’t you take your sunglasses off, hmm? Then we can have a proper conversation.
Sinnerman: Want to do your little desire shtick? Let me save us both some time. I like redheads, strawberries, and long walks on the beach. I’ve got work to do, now that you’re all checked in. I don’t have time for parlor tricks.
Lucifer: Right. You hide behind your glasses, but know this… when I find out what someone truly desires, I find out their greatest weakness. And that’s not a parlor trick, Sinnerman. It’s power.
Sinnerman: Hmm.
Lucifer: And I promise you I will find out what you really want, and when I do, I’m going to use it to destroy you.
Sinnerman: (Slightly pulls down the top of his sunglasses to show a bit of his eyes.) Yeah. I’m right here, pal. What do you got? (Quickly pushes the glasses back into place.) Too slow.
Lucifer: (screams) Why?! Why are you doing this?
Sinnerman: You’ll see.
(TV flickers off.)
Lucifer: No!
(Chloe and Charlotte are in Chloe’s car discussing the plan for when they go in and meet Frankie.)
Chloe: The reason I asked you to come along is ’cause you know Frankie. I really need you to work that connection.
Charlotte: He won’t know what hit him.
Chloe: Wait. Can you stick to the script and say exactly what I told you to say?
Charlotte: Well, of course. I’m not an idiot.
Chloe: Let’s go.
(Chloe and Charlotte are seated with Frankie and a couple of his compatriots. )
Charlotte: Last time we talked, you wished there was a way that you could help with Joey’s death. Well, there is.
Chloe: Our prime suspect is a criminal who calls himself the Sinnerman.
(The three men exchange looks between themselves.)
Yes, there she is
Frankie: Doesn’t ring a bell
Charlotte: Frankie, you know that you and your people are not under investigation here.
Chloe: We just want a way to find this guy.
Charlotte: The Sinnerman is known to have entrepreneurial ties. Did you ever cross paths with him?
Frankie: Well, Louie here crosses paths with the Cinnabon once a week. Can’t get enough of ’em. Am I right, Louie?
Louie: Yeah.
Charlotte: If you help us out, I promise it’ll be worth your while.
Chloe: Charlotte, we can’t do that.
Charlotte: Look, Frankie, come on, handy for an entrepreneur like you to have friends in the DA’s office.
A romance we have…
Frankie: Sorry, ladies. Wish I could help.
Charlotte: (Gets angry. Stands up and leans across the table.) Cut the crap, Frankie. Give us something.
Chloe: Charlotte… (Chloe stands.) Thank you, Mr. Ferrante, for your time. Good evening, gentlemen.
It remains a mystery
Frankie: Good night, ladies.
Right there she is…
(Chloe and Charlotte walk to the car.)
Charlotte: I’m sorry, Detective Decker. I know I went off script a bit, but I wanted to get you what you needed. And I didn’t.
Chloe: Charlotte, are you kidding me? You were perfect. Frankie had to make sure that we weren’t coming after him, and coming from you, he believed it. Mobsters like that… they don’t talk to the cops.
Charlotte: Then what was the point of that? How does this get us any closer to the Sinnerman?
Chloe: Frankie obviously cares about Joey. He’s gonna want to get revenge. I think he’s gonna find the Sinnerman on his own.
Charlotte: And when he does… you’ll be waiting. You expected me to fail, didn’t you? Why didn’t you just trust me with the truth?
Chloe: Charlotte, you know the things you’ve done. You know the reasons I can’t trust you.
Charlotte: Huh. I suppose… I do.
Chloe: And, look, I want to believe that this change of heart is for real, but you’re gonna have to earn that trust back, okay? This is a good start, though. I got to stay here and watch Frankie, but let me call you a car, get you a ride home.
Charlotte: I’ll find my own way home. Good night.
Chloe: Oh. Night.
(Charlotte walks away deep in thought. Chloe’s phone rings.)
Chloe: Hey, Pierce.
Marcus: You still working that Ferrante angle?
Chloe: Uh, yeah, I am. It’s turned into a stakeout. But why?
Marcus: ‘Cause I brought food. Mind if I join you?
(She turns to see Marcus sitting on a motorcycle with a bag of take-out. She smiles.)
(Lucifer is trying to change the channel on the TV and only getting static.)
Lucifer: Come on. Oh… So this is your diabolical plan? Is it? Hmm? To bore me to death?!
Maze: Lucifer? Lucifer, I know you’re in here.
Lucifer: (Banging on the door to get her attention.) In here!
(Maze unlatches and opens the door.)
Lucifer: Maze! Oh, you’re a sight for sore eyes. I didn’t realize you still kept tabs on me.
(She blocks him from leaving the room.)
Maze: What are you talking about? I tracked you down because I have a bone to pick with you.
Lucifer: What?
Maze: I asked you to talk. And you blow me off and hide in a freezer? I thought we were past all of this.
Lucifer: Oh, sure, yeah, thought I’d just hang around in here like a frozen side of beef just to avoid you. Hello! I was a prisoner! The Sinnerman had me trapped here. Uh…
(She blocks him from leaving again.)
Lucifer: Now would you please just stand aside? I need to figure out what he’s up to, and I’ve already lost enough time as it is.
Maze: Hang on. You were trapped?
Lucifer: Well, obviously!
(He turns his head to look around the room. Maze takes this opportunity to close and lock the door.)
Lucifer: Maze! Oh, for… Maze! Come on, open up! I’ve got places to go, people to hurt! Just think of someone else’s needs for a change! Can you hear?
Maze: You’re going nowhere, Lucifer. You don’t get out until you listen to what I have to say, and act like you care.
Lucifer: (to himself) Can’t believe this. (He’s angry and frustrated… He also knows he’s trapped and has no choice. So, with his kindest, sweetest voice, he says…) What’s on your mind, Maze?
Maze: Did you know that Linda and Amenadiel are a thing?
Lucifer: Linda and Amenadiel are doing what now? How’d you know? What makes you say that?
Maze: Well, I saw them in her office. “Talking.” They were clearly about to bone.
Lucifer: Right, you do realize that talking in her office is literally Linda’s job?
Maze: Interesting point.
Lucifer: Hmm, isn’t it? And, you know, so what if Amenadiel is playing doctor with the doctor? So our old flames are having a fling. I don’t care. Why should you? Unless… Unless you’re still hot for angel?
Maze: No!
Lucifer: No?
Maze: No!
Lucifer: Ah.
Maze: Well, I… I mean, she’s just… my best friend, and he’s my ex. I don’t like it.
Lucifer: So, you don’t want him, but nobody else can have him. That’s awfully greedy of you, Maze.
Maze: I’ve been gone for too long, okay? I just need to know what the hell is going on.
Lucifer: And what would you do if you knew? Hmm? Look, you really want my advice, Mazikeen? Ask yourself what you truly desire. And be honest. Otherwise, there’s no point.
(Long silence.)
Lucifer: Maze? Mazikeen? (He bangs on the door.) You still there?
(The door unlatches and opens. Maze is standing there.)
Maze: Thanks, Lucifer.
Lucifer: (angry) Great talk. Glad I could help. Got to go.
(He blows past her and leaves.)
(Marcus is in the passenger seat and they are talking.)
Marcus: I wonder when Frankie’s gonna make his move.
Chloe: Soon. Bet they’re reaching out to their sources, probably calling the Sinnerman right now.
Marcus: All right. Out with it, Decker. I either have food in my teeth, or you have something you want to say to me.
Chloe: Why is this case so important to you?
Marcus: It’s not. It’s a high-priority case, and… I need to display leadership to the suits downtown. That’s all.
Chloe: Really? Showing up out of nowhere while I’m on a stakeout? You said it yourself. You and the Sinnerman crossed paths in Chicago. This is personal, isn’t it?
Marcus: It is. The Sinnerman k*lled my brother.
Chloe: I’m sorry.
Marcus: I thought I could run away from the pain of it. From him. Now I know that I can’t anymore, so I need to find him and make him pay for what he did.
Chloe: Do you know why I asked for that personal day? The anniversary of my father’s death is coming up. And, uh, he was k*lled on duty.
Marcus: I’m sorry. I didn’t know.
Chloe: It was a long time ago. But just a few months ago, we finally found the guy who did it. And I had dreamed of that moment for so long. Also kind of dreaded it. I mean, he caused my family so much pain. When I finally found him, I… I didn’t know what I’d do.
Marcus: What did you do?
Chloe: I did the right thing. I arrested him. But it wasn’t easy.
Marcus: I get it.
Chloe: I know why you don’t talk about this stuff. I don’t, either, not even to Lucifer. It’s just too painful. Think about what you really want. Don’t do anything you’re gonna regret.
Marcus: I guess I have to give you that personal day now.
(Chloe chuckles.)
Chloe: Heads up, we got someone.
Marcus: He doesn’t look like a mobster. Maybe one of their sources. Let’s hang tight.
Chloe: Copy that.
(Chloe gets a call from Lucifer.)
Chloe: Lucifer.
Lucifer: Detective.
Chloe: Finally. Look, I’m on a stakeout. You were right. The Sinnerman is behind this.
Lucifer: You don’t say. I’ve just gotten out of cold storage after being grabbed by him again.
Chloe: What? Are you okay?
Lucifer: I’m fine. Just dying to crush that pathetic excuse for a man.
Chloe: You saw him? What does he look like?
Lucifer: Black fellow, early 40s, though he dresses like an old man. Would you believe he wore a sweater vest? His greatest crime yet.
Chloe: That’s not a source; that’s him.
(Chloe puts down the phone and leaves it in the car as she starts to get out and she says to Marcus…)
Chloe: Let’s go.
Lucifer: (yelling into the phone) Wait, Detective. Detective? Bloody hell.
(He steps on the gas.)
(Chloe enters first with her g*n drawn. The Sinnerman is holding a g*n and is standing over men lying on the floor.)
Chloe: Drop the weapon.
(The Sinnerman points the g*n and fires at Chloe. They exchange rounds, and he runs off through the kitchen.)
Chloe: I’m on him! Cut him off!
(Marcus, with his own g*n drawn, enters the dining room.)
Marcus: Chloe, wait!
(When he sees he can’t stop her, he goes back out the front entrance. Chloe follows the Sinnerman into the kitchen. He fires on her. She ducks for cover on the floor. He fires again.)
Chloe: We’ve got units outside! If you give up now, we can take you in safely.
Sinnerman: But this is so much fun.
(He fires two more shots.)
Chloe: Oh. (quietly to herself) Where are you? Where are you?
(She uses reflections in metal objects to locate the Sinnerman and fires. He runs out the back door. Outside, Marcus tackles the Sinnerman against a van and knocks him on his back to the ground. Marcus stands over him with both hands on his g*n.)
(They stare at each other a long moment.)
Sinnerman: Do what you got to do.
(Chloe now arrives from the kitchen’s back door.)
Chloe: Pierce, wait.
(She cautiously walks up beside him. Reaches out her hand and touches his arm.)
Chloe: Hey. Let me help you.
(After a long tense moment, Marcus relaxes and holsters his g*n.)
Marcus: You already did.
(Marcus pulls the Sinnerman up, turns him around, and cuffs him.)
Marcus: You’re under arrest. Let’s go.
(The police and EMTs have arrived. Lucifer drives up and gets out of his car.)
Lucifer: Detective. Are you okay? What happened?
Chloe: We got him.
Lucifer: What? You did it. You got the Sinnerman.
Chloe: Actually, Pierce did.
Lucifer: Right. Right. Well, where-where is he?
Chloe: He’s, um…
(Lucifer now sees the Sinnerman sitting on the back of an EMT vehicle being tended to. He is handcuffed with his arms behind him.)
Lucifer: I want to talk to him.
Chloe: (Chloe stops him.) Lucifer. Don’t worry. You’ll get your chance.
(We can see that the Sinnerman has gotten a hold of a metal pen and is slipping it up the cuff of his sleeve.)

EMT: Officer, he’s ready.
(An officer takes the Sinnerman and puts him in a patrol car for transport.)
(Maze arrives to find the office door locked. She knocks.)
Maze: Linda, you there?
(Linda unlocks and opens the door and stands with one hand on the door and the other on the door frame, blocking Maze from coming in.)
Dr. Linda: What’s up?
Maze: Are you alone?
Dr. Linda: Yeah. Why?
(Maze slowly walks into the office.)
Maze: ‘Cause you’re acting kind of strange.
Dr. Linda: What’s going on?
(Maze sits on the couch. Dr. Linda sits in her chair.)
Maze: Uh… I should have told you this earlier, but it was… weird seeing you and Amenadiel so… chummy.
Dr. Linda: Oh. Were we?
Maze: Yeah, you were. Made me feel like beating the crap out of him. Or at least throwing rocks at cars. But, no, I didn’t. I came to tell you how I feel.
Dr. Linda: Yes. Please. Tell me.
Maze: Okay. Um… I’ve been thinking about it all day. You’re my best friend, you know? And he’s my ex. And by-by “ex,” I mean, like, one of a million ex-sexual partners and not anything special. Any-Anyway, um… it makes me feel left out. So I don’t want you two getting together if that’s possible.
Dr. Linda: I understand. You have nothing to worry about.
(They both nod. Maze relaxes and looks relieved.)
Maze: Thank you. I figured you wouldn’t want my sloppy seconds, anyway. And you know me, I was all over that angel. I went in deep. Used every tool in that Swiss Army knife. Know what I mean? I touched nerves that he never knew he had.
Dr. Linda: I can only imagine.
Maze: Yeah. Anyway… (Maze hugs Dr. Linda.) You’re the best, Linda.
(We see that Dr. Linda is concerned and looks a little guilty.)
(Charlotte is sitting in a stall, weeping, when there is a knock on the stall door.)
Dan: You okay in there?
Charlotte: Um… (sniffles) I’m-I’m fine. Thank you, Detective Espinoza.
Dan: Charlotte?
Charlotte: I just needed a moment. And I thought that this was… the one place that I wouldn’t be disturbed.
Dan: I don’t want to pry, but, uh, you don’t seem fine.
Charlotte: I’m not. I switched to prosecution to try and be a better person… but I’m not helping anyone. I just keep screwing things up. I was really good at being the old me. The best. But I know I need to make a change. And I suck at it.
Dan: No one expects you to change overnight. It’s hard to be one of the good guys. Look, I screw up, too. I’ve made plenty of mistakes, believe me. But I don’t quit… and I know that counts for something. At least you’re trying, right?
(Charlotte opens the door and comes out of the stall.)
Charlotte: Thank you, Dan.
Dan: Don’t mention it.
(The bathroom door opens and a male officer enters the bathroom, looking confused upon seeing Charlotte and Dan standing there.)
Dan: Oh, hey, Hernandez.
Charlotte: I’m in the men’s room, aren’t I?
Dan: Oh, yeah.
(They both laugh. He escorts her out of the room.)
(Lucifer is standing near a back wall watching and waiting as people go about their business.)
What happens in the shadows
No one has to know
The truth is in the gallows
It’ll burn, but it won’t let go
A whisper in the darkness
In the quiet it’ll grow
You try to hide it
In the farthest place
But everybody knows
There’s something in the shadows
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
Cuts you like an arrow
Shifting through the dark
Your strength is in your weakness
This fire in your blood
Hanging from that hope
But everybody knows
There’s something in the shadows
(Finally, the last officer leaves the interrogation room where the Sinnerman is being held. Lucifer smiles and walks toward the room. He sneaks into the room. Quietly closes the door and turns to see the Sinnerman sitting at the table, turned facing the back wall of the room.)
Lucifer: My, my… how the tables have turned. I don’t know if you remember, but I made you a promise… to look into your eyes and find out what the great Sinnerman desires… and then take it from him.
There’s something in the shadows
Lucifer: I’m a man of my word, so let’s get to it, shall we?
(The Sinnerman has his head turned, looking away from Lucifer.)
Lucifer: Look at me. (screams) Look into my eyes!
(The Sinnerman’s arm drops down and we see he is holding the metal pen from earlier, but now it’s covered in blood.)
There’s something in the shadows
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
Cuts you like an arrow
Shifting through the dark
(Lucifer physically turns the Sinnerman to face him and we see that he has gouged out his own eyes.)
Sinnerman: Now… you’ll never know what I want.
Lucifer: But…
Hanging from that hope
(Dan opens the door and sees the state the Sinnerman is in and starts yelling.)
Dan: Code-20! Code-20! Code-20! Somebody get a medic in here!
(The Sinnerman laughs.)
